Port Description

Atuona, Hiva Oa
So lush, so primevally Pacific, this island bursts with aromatic flowers and land so fertile it borders on obscene. The artist Gauguin lies beneath volcanic soils in the peaceful Cavalry Cemetery. During the time he spent at Hiva Oa, he was prolific with more than just his paintings--his many descendents live on in Puamau Village. Atuona is the main village on this Southern Marquesan island where clouds sit on top of the mountain like scarves on a green giant. Petroglyphs line the steamy jungles and Tiki stones lead the way to beaches that whisper with the sounds of waves.
