No buildings are taller than palm trees in the city of Basse-Terre to allow for wide-open views of the green volcanic slopes of looming Mount Liamuiga. Sitting on the southern side of St. Kitts, the town’s white colonial-style houses speak of a storied and checkered past--slave auctions were a common occurrence at what is today known as Independence Square. Only nine miles across tropical fruits and flowers lies the precipitously perched barracks of the famous Brimstone Hill Fortress dating back to the late 1600s. Vervet monkeys scamper through the surrounding national parkland, stealing vistas of the sea.
