Castries, St. Lucia
Some say St. Lucia is pear-shaped, others liken its contours to a mango--apropos for a wind-kissed island awash in tropical pleasures. Sultry Caribbean weather means St. Lucia's lands produce an abundance of mouthwatering fruit, and there is no better place to sample the succulent harvest than at the Castries Market. Local merchants also offer pungent spices, bottles of fiery pepper sauce, handmade baskets, and even jars of leeches to a bustling, gossiping crowd. Morne Fortuné, or the Hill of Good Fortune, rises behind the city and its natural harbor.
