Due to a brief stint under German control, there are a surprising number of Bavarian-style buildings in Qingdao, but the resemblance stops there. Situated in an area known to be the birthplace of Confucius, Qingdao looks south at Mt. Laosham, known locally as "home of the immortals," and the setting for the Taoist Quanzhen Sect's temples and sanctuaries. Spring water tumbling down the mountainside sustains the famous Tsingtao Beer factory. The city's six separate beaches each have their own charms, and sharks are kept away by a large net strategically placed out to sea.
