Da Nang, Vietnam
Almost any geographic feature imaginable lies here, be it plain or mountain, river or island. The five peaks of the Marble Mountains represent each of the elements--water, earth, metal, fire, and wood--all laced with hidden Buddhist shrines. The mountains meet the sea at China Beach. Yes, the China Beach. Chosen by the U.S. army as their first landing point in South Vietnam, Da Nang became an important air and sea base. Much changed during that time, but the centuries-old Cham culture is still preserved in the fascinating museum, and Cham ruins line the hills near rice fields and bamboo groves.
