Hobart, Tasmania, Australia
After a day on this gorgeous, very southern, Australian island (often called the "gateway to Antarctica"), some might ask, "where in tarnation is the Tasmanian Devil?" The answer is that they're all sleeping and only come out at night. Be glad--these screeching, yawning, little devils are so irritating that they once fetched a bounty on their head. There's nothing annoying about the rest of Tasmania, however, with its freshwater streams brimming with trout, lavender fields that bloom in January, cool-climate wineries, and stunning Cataract Gorge. The small city of Hobart oodles with charming Georgian buildings and sandstone houses.
