Only two of these eight tiny islands off the coast of Guadeloupe are inhabited, making this off-the-beaten-track destination a place of serene, slow-paced simplicity. Virtually untouched by tourism, Terre-de-Haut and Terre-de-Bas offer a peek into the Caribbean past. Picturesque gingerbread cottages line narrow, hilly streets. Fishermen mend nets on the shore while their colorful boats bob nearby. Coral gardens are just a short fin-swim from shore at Plage de Pompierre, where a herd of hungry goats prowl the sands for handouts.
