Port Description

Philipsburg, Sint Maarten, Netherlands Antilles

It's all Dutch in Philipsburg, from the cute little houses to the old courthouse dating back to 1793. Cross over to the island's other side, and St. Maarten becomes St. Martin. Croissants and quiche supplant chocolates and hollandaise. Differences aside, however, a mango smoothie is a mango smoothie whether it's ordered in Dutch or French. Many are consumed on the beach in Marigot, at boogie-down discos in Philipsburg, or on sailboats leisurely floating through the sea. The island's sense of serenity transcends its boundaries, allowing everyone access to the Great Salt Pond, Arawak Indian archaeological sites, and mangrove-lined Simpson Bay.
