Nha Trang, Vietnam
Practically the whole population gets around by foot or bicycle, so it's easy to hear the waves in this relaxed Vietnamese beach town. Surrounded by dragon fruit, thick palms flank miles of beach off which 70 islands float in the South China Sea. Restaurants line the sand selling seafood delicacies like abalone and squid at bargain prices. Swim all day, stare at the great white Buddha, do tai chi, or visit the Cham Ponagar temple complex with its astounding towers. At night, friendly chatter in a variety of languages spills out of dimly lit nightspots with flickering neon signs.
