Guadalcanal (Honiara)
One of the largest islands in the Solomon Islands chain, Guadalcanal will forever be remembered for its importance in American history during World War II. Learning that the Japanese were building an airstrip on the island, the American military realized the strategic importance of gaining control of the island. On August 7, 1942, United States Marines invaded the island and, even though their air and naval support retreated, the soldiers remaining on the island fought and secured the airstrip and parts of the island. Today, war remnants are everywhere, including rusted fighter planes and gun turrets. In an interesting note of progress, the very important airstrip is today a golf course.
