Saipan

Some believe that Amelia Earhart died here on this San Francisco-sized Northern Mariana island. During the war, Japanese troops hid in island caves, some so out of touch with reality that they didn't emerge until years after the war was over. So determined were they not to be captured by U.S. troops that they threw themselves off Saipan's giant cliffs, now named Suicide Cliffs to reflect the tragedy. Quickly developing into a tourist resort, the island is fringed with reef on its western side and there are still remote sections of the lush rainforest to explore.
