Port Description

Okinawa (Naha)

Floating on a sea of green, coral reefs flank the subtropical island of Okinawa. The island's fragrant, colorful flowers and picturesque scenery belie the days when it was staging ground for one of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific. During the Second World War, the Allies set their sights on Okinawa to launch attacks on the Japanese mainland. After the war, U.S. forces occupied the island. Despite being returned to Japanese control in 1972, American troops still have a high-profile presence, and the U.S. Consulate is based at Naha. At Tomigusuku, visitors can peek into history to see where the Imperial Navy used to hide out.
