A Mobile landmark since its opening in 1940, the Admiral Semmes is named for Raphael Semmes, best remembered as the first and only commander of the Confederate ship, Alabama. Closed due to damage from Hurricane Frederic in 1979, the hotel was renovated in 1985. The exterior, typical of the restrained architectural styles commonly found at the end of the depression, is contrasted by interior flourishes including the lobby's expansive marble floor and curving stairs, unique oval balcony, large central chandelier, mirrored walls in the mezzanine, and original Art Deco elevator doors.

For enjoyment or relaxation, Radisson Admiral Semmes offers a seasonal pool, complete with whirlpool. The surrounding landscaped courtyard and quaint gazebo, which is located off the main floor, makes this an inviting area for parties, wedding receptions, or special occasions. The hotel has made arrangements with the downtown YMCA for both men and women, located just blocks away at the end of St. Michael Street. With a room key, guests enjoy swimming, sauna, steam bath, indoor and outdoor jogging tracks, weight room, basketball and handball courts, nautilus equipment and much more.
