great trip

Gorgeous hotel that is conveniently located
My husband and I visited Washington, DC, for the first time and found a great deal for this hotel on travelocity.com. We were so impressed when we arrived at the hotel. Not only does it look fantastic - I should say luxurious, but the hotel staff was extremely personable and helpful. Our great impression continued when we entered our room. We had a beautiful room with a great view of the marina and found we were walking distance from the seafood market along the river which we enjoyed very much (it's far enough away so no seafood smell reaches the hotel, but close enough to walk to for a great lunch or dinner). We also found we were within comfortable walking distance from the main DC attractions! The Jefferson Memorial and Washington Monument are each just a short stroll away - and we felt secure enough in the hotel area to walk to each at night. The only negatives to this hotel: valet parking is expensive (but they are extremely prompt and friendly - very good at what they do), hotel brunch is expensive with limited selection (but the restaurant is very accomodating to special orders), and hotel pool closes too early (9 PM).
Comfortable Stay
The hotel is nice, the bedding and bathroom accommodations are very nice. A little pricey and very limited menu. Nothing to do at night in the hotel, would be great for older travelers. No night life! $15.00 a day for the internet was just too much when you are paying $400 to $600 a night for the room! The Spa was closed on the day we wanted to have a massage. The doorman offered to get us tickets to the Washington Monument, . He then told us two days later that they would be * (there was 7 of us).
Overall an Enjoyable Stay
First of all, the hotel is located just about 2 1/2 blocks away from the National Mall so it is definitely convenient. The rooms were adequate, with the bathroom being the nicest feature of the room. The view was of an office building, but I was staying there for the proximity of attractions, not for the view. Room service was quick and efficient, but expensive ( but what do you really expect). Also, you can order any item from one of the onsite restaurants with roomservice even if it is not listen in the room service booklet. The pool was nice and the exercise room was well appointed. Front desk staff was helpful and the maid service was very good. Only real complaints with the hotel were that the hotel lobby was having some trouble with flooding...random hammering and drilling going on in the hotel at 9 in the morning...and the guys at the front door were much more concerned with talking to eachother than helping (hands full with luggage and groceries, didn't even hold the door open.)
Second time a charm
The first stay at the Mandarin Oriental was a little disappointing and I wrote the manager to explain. They assured me that my complaints would be corrected during my next visit. They were right. Our room was lovely with a fabuous view of the Jefferson Memorial. The bathroom was immaculate (with a flat screen TV). We had a wonderful lunch in Cafe MoZu. Would definitely recommend this hotel.
