The service was outstanding. Very friendly staff. The rooms were ok, kind of small. Beds were pretty bad. As far as would I stay here again it would depend on the price, if there was something else for like $* $* more a night I would try someplace else because of the beds.

Hotel Renoir (thumbs up)

r l. from boston, MA – Would stay again
Stayed Nov 2009, 5 days

Pleasant, clean place, nonsmoking, easily comparable to budget chain motels both in appointments and cost. Has a modest breakfast room (no free bf), there are competent coffee/donut/pastry shops nearby, plus trivially easy access to upscale restaurants. Down at the heels neighborhood outside the "front" door; but at night the front door is locked --and the backdoor opens on a quiet, well-lit district. Two blocks to Civic plaza, SF Symphony and the Opera House. 1 block from BART, dozens of buses cross within steps of the hotel - as near as I can tell very simple access to the entire city. Two blocks from Library with a vast $2 used book shop ! The hotel blurb forgets to mention there is Wi-Fi available in the rooms for a lower price than most places, including the budget chains. The staff are *very* competent, very friendly, the other guests I met were all honest people - many travelling on retirement budgets. Roughly 50-50 Americans vs else. In my case, I stayed at the Renoir while attending a conference at one of the high end hotels. My total air-fare plus hotel cost was lower than just the room chargest at the conference hotel. What's not to like ?

This hotel is the PIT of the earth

Renoir Hotel is disgusting and filthy. There are bed bugs as i found out. As one walks in the lobby, the carpet greets you with filth. The rooms are sented with Mildew/mold and the room rugs are as dirty as the lobbies. Windows are jammed so one can not open them. The bird droppings are everywhere in the plenum area outside the rooms. It smells bad everywhere rooms have no airconditioning, they give you a fan to plug in. They try to mend the fact that it is in a poor sector of town, It is horrible with the bums, drugies, everywhere. They lock the front enterence and one must walk to the back exit not on Market. This is dangerous for the lighting does not exist. Elevator's are slow and filthy inside with red lined carpet. They had parties going on Friday night till 4am and nothing was done. It was avbsolutley the worst experience that i have ever had in any hotel in the US. The managment did nothing about it. I had to be moved, because the room had bed bugs. It was bad. They tried to cover it up but was not willing to give me my money back. It needs to be knocked down. They have a picture on the net with numbers of pople in the front of the hotel. It is very deciving for it covers the front of the block which is falling apart. Most buildings are empty and lease signs are in the windows. The front desk had no clue that the hotel rooms are just a pit. As i compained " I was told that don't Worry, Worry about the people who had the room before you" 5 days i will never forget. TRASH IT !

Anne L. from Irvine, CA – Would stay again
Stayed Aug 2009, 1 day

Honestly when I first read reviews I was completely hesitant about staying here. It seemed like an extremely dangerous area and I was expecting to get attacked or something. Yes, there are a lot of homeless people, and druggies, but if you don't bother them, they don't bother you. The people you probably should watch out for are the nutjobs that yell at you randomly. If you are from the LA area like I am, it probably won't be a big deal. It certainly is a pretty shady area and I would not walk around in the middle of the night alone. But even around 10 or so, there were a lot of people walking around seeing it is by Union Square so it was not that bad at all. Location was great, you can easily take the Bart or bus which is like less than a min walk away. The hotel itself is okay. It wasn't as bad as I expected it to be from the reviews, the sheets were clean (no bugs), the bed quite comfortable, and bathroom was pretty clean also. The rooms were just normal sized rooms for an old hotel. Don't expect a 5 star hotel size. Noise wise, I wasn't bothered at all at night, but they were having construction in the morning so that was a bummer. No big deal though. I'm also pretty sure I had ac in the room. It was ridiculously hot when I went during the day and at night, but my room was really cool and they give you an old fan. Its probably not a place to stay for families, or romantic getaway for couples but if you're just going down to visit on a tight budget with friends, for the price its not that bad.

The room had no air conditioning, and it was warmer than usual in San Francisco. The windows had no screens, so the open windows were not secure. The room overlooked Market Street, which was extremely noisy, and given the open windows, made sleeping a challenge.
