The hotel was in a great location, but that’s about the only thing that was good about it. The hotel, in general, smelled terrible. The smell was a mix of stale cigarette smoke and a flowery, cloying scent that was probably meant to cover that up. The pool, which was a major requirement for us when choosing a hotel, was closed. The staff indicated that they had noted this on their website, but because we booked too far in advance we wouldn’t have seen that. We were offered the alternative of driving over to the Comfort Inn to use their pool. The next thing we realized was that many people brought dogs. The room two doors down from us had a large dog who proceeded to bark for over an hour. We requested a room change so we had to pack up everything and move, but then that room was in the former smoking section of the hotel and smelled so strongly of smoke that we had to ask for a third room. I promise you, I am not usually a complainer, so this was BAD. In both rooms (the first that we spent a few hours in before the dog started barking) and the one that we ended up in, several issues were noted. Light bulbs were burned out, and the tub in the second room was slow draining, leaving us in water that covered our feet by the end of the shower. I have stayed in cities that are much bigger tourist destinations and in much, much nicer hotels for a similar rate. Up side: The staff was very nice. especially Donna, who was very understanding about our room change requests.

Pool closed over 4th of July!!

Pros: Good breakfast, reasonable rates, updated room and bathroom
Cons: Summer is short in Maine so if you advertise an outdoor pool, make sure it's open during the summer season. Also, clean those carpets more often!
Location: Close to the highway (I-95), the Civic Center, movie theater, restaurants, and shopping. Within an hour or so from Portland and beaches.
Went there for the week over July 4th 2018, chose this place specifically because of the location (convenient to shopping and restaurants) and they advertise a nice outdoor pool. The pool was closed for repairs, had been closed for months(!!) and there was a heat wave that week. Also, the room was nice but the carpet was absolutely filthy. I walked around barefoot for a few minutes and the bottoms of my feet were black from the sticky, nasty carpet. Notified housekeeping and the front desk and was told they were scheduled to clean the carpets in a week (!) which means other guests would have the same experience. Was scheduled to stay 6 nights, left after 1 night for a hotel with a pool that was actually open (and very refreshing!) and had clean carpets.

Best Western Civic Center - Average stay

Pros: Close restaurants, Free Internet
Cons: Poor breakfast
I was a bit disappointed in this hotel upon arrival. One of the two on the desk, though perhaps not rude, still something of an attitude as if we were bothering her. Then as soon as we were walking down the lengthy corridor to our room, I mentioned to my wife that "this is not one of the better Best Western I have stayed at" (I spend up to 300 nights a year in hotels). The room was adequate but other than the bathroom which seemed to have been recently refurbished, was average at best. I just had the feeling that it was past due for an upgrade. Not dirty or damp, but not quite alive and cheerful appearing either. Where I became less enamored with this hotel was in the morning. The so-called "Continental Breakfast" was among the worst of the Continental breakfasts I have encountered. So much so, that a couple of large parties decided to go to Panera nearby for breakfast. Two of the three coffee pots were out. The hot water for tea was luke warm at best. There was no yogurt, no bread, no english muffins (I checked back several times), in fact nothing but a couple dozen small boxes of Cheerios, and a few packaged Danish and blueberry muffins. If I were to stay here again, I would certainly plan of breakfast out. Another thing I noticed was that the alternative entrance(s) did not have card reader access so presumably anyone could walk in. We did not have any security issues but I know that for some people this is an issue which the hotel might want to address. We were not able to adjust the temperature setting for the room, which was set at 70 degrees. The bed was comfortable. The room was generally quiet but there was some occasional room-to-room noise. Pets are allowed and several people had dogs but I did not hear barking from within our room. Location is probably one of the key features of this hotel, being next door to the civic center, across the street from a shopping plaza and restaurants, and close to the capitol.

Greatly Improved

I have stayed here in the past and it was ok. However when my family and I came back this summer, I was shocked. I guess all Holiday Inns are improving and this one is no exception. They completly renovated the lobby and entrance, hallways, room bathrooms, added fridges and microwaves, renovated exercise room, added guest laundry facility, etc. The rooms were clean and as always, the service was flawless. If your going to Augusta, this is the place to stay.

Nice Place

Facility is good but the staff is what set it above the other hotels I've stayed in around Augusta. Clean comfortable rooms and a good restaurant that provides room service. I needed assistance with takeing some boxes over to the civic center where my meeting was and the desk clerk offered to give me a ride before I asked for help. Knowing I flew into town and had no vehicle, that anticipating of needs is what sets them apart. Thank you for a great stay.

Great Stay

My stay was unexpected but very good. We were stuck in a snow storm while traveling through the area. The staff was very accomodating and friendly. Good value with very clean and comfortable rooms.
