Once the center of the Ryukyu Kingdom, the Japanese island of Okinawa is now a popular destination for beach-lovers, snorkelers, and history buffs. It's also home to one of the highest proportions of supercentenarians in the world and is renowned for its above average life expectancy. Whatever the cause, something about this island is special and it attracts tourists in droves each year. Okinawa flights land at Naha Airport (OKA), which is located in the capital city of Naha at the southern end of Okinawa Island.
Several hotels in Okinawa are located close to OKA; you'll find quite a number of them if you cross the river into the center of Naha. The Airport Limousine Bus makes stops at many local hotels. Travelers fresh off flights to Okinawa can catch this shuttle outside the domestic terminal on the first floor. This is also the area where you can find cabs and buses to take you into Naha. The relatively new Okinawa Urban Monorail is another quick and convenient way to get into the capital. If you're headed up to the city of Okinawa, just 20 miles north of OKA, it may be best to rent a car from one of the rental companies on site, as transportation around the island can be difficult and cabs are pricy. Once you're settled in at your hotel, grab a snorkel and peek into a secret world amid the vibrant coral reefs that surround the island, or spend a relaxing day on the sand. Later, explore the Southeast Botanical Gardens or the Churaumi Aquarium.
