Known as the "City of Choice," Escondido is located in Southern California, northeast of downtown San Diego. As one of the oldest cities in the area, it has its share of history. However, it's the current residents that make Escondido vacations fun and active affairs.
Downtown you'll find the heaviest concentrations of shops, restaurants, and hotels in Escondido, but cultural attractions are spread throughout the city and surrounding areas. Must-see spots include the California Center for the Arts, a unique performing arts complex, museum, and conference center Queen Califia's Magical Circle, an amazing sculpture garden created by the late world-acclaimed artist Niki de Saint Phalle and the San Diego Children's Discovery Museum. Also in Escondido is the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, the sister to the world-famous San Diego Zoo, which exhibits animals in open habitats. Escondido has plenty of outdoor space for its human residents too, with Daley Ranch—a wilderness preserve with extensive trails—and a bevy of golf courses and lakes for outdoor recreation. Make sure to book an Escondido car rental so you don't miss any of these fantastic excursions.
Grand Avenue is the place to be every Friday night from April through September, when Cruisin' Grand, a parade of pre-1970s cars, takes over the street with a different theme every week. The shops stay open late to add to all of the excitement, and there are kids' activities to keep the little tykes entertained too. Every vacation in Escondido should include a trip to Grand Avenue if hot rods aren't your thing, it becomes a much mellower scene on Tuesdays, when a farmers market pops up instead. If Tuesday doesn't work out, don't worry—Escondido enjoys a different farmers market every day from Saturday through Tuesday!
