Probably the nicest peoperty there but old

The hotel facitilies themselves were nice and clean. The hotel is a bit outdated and older but the decorations are nice. The main trouble with the hotel was our check-in and reception staff. Unfortunately the receptionist's English was very poor and he kept telling us different policies and answers to our questions. I had called ahead of our stay to inform them that we will be three people instead of two. On the phone there was no issue. When we arrived? They charged us an extra fee of 170$. After asking for an extra bed, he offered either a roll-in bed or a room with three beds. After showing us the room we initially booked, we decided to have a three bed room. He then said he didn't know if he had it available (after offering it to us as an option). In he end we had to wait for 1 hour for the three bed room. We asked for water, which we were then charged for (as curtosy, this should have been given to us complimentary). We had an appointment at the spa. The treatment itself was nice but not as nice as it should have been. the facilities were also outdated for the price they charged. On a positive note, the beds were comfortable and breakfast, dinner and tea time was included and very good. Overall,I think this is the nicest hotel in aquas calientes but it is not worthy of 5 stars in my opinion. The customer service was not up to par for 5 star standards. After a 4 day hike we were excited to come here but the checkin process ruined the stay.

Staff was very generous and amicable, make you feel like in home. Machu Picchu is a beautiful place and the Sumaq Hotel is one of the best in town. Our stay there was memorable. I definitely enjoyed the ceviche and pisco sour complementary class offered, it is a must have.

A Great Way to Spend New Year's Eve!

We booked this hotel at the last minute for a two night stay. What a surprise - it was wonderful and well worth the money! From the time the employee porters met our train on New Year's Eve this hotel was a true pleasure. Beautiful room looking over the river rapids just off our balcony. The room was equipped with a refrigerator, whirlpool tub, great beds, and wonderful service. If you are going to Machu Pichu, this hotel is a must stay. BTW, the food is fabulous - try the Alpaca, it is exquisite. Actually, everything we ate here was exquisite! There is a spa but we didn't use it - not that we weren't in need of it, but we spent all three days that we were there up on the mountain in the midst of the magic that is Machu Pichu. Be sure to wander through the town and shop in the cute shops. Don't bother staying at the Sanctuary - other than the park itself, there is nothing around that area. There are no cars, taxis or limos in Aguas Caliente - only the buses that take you up the mountain, so don't miss the last one down the mountain or you are in for a long, long walk. Back to the hotel - the staff, particularly the front desk staff was extremely accommodating and a pleasure to deal with. The beds, kinda like a Westin bed.. The setting 0 a paradise. Does it get any better than this, probably not!
