Please read** My experience was less than ideal. The hotel is located about 4-5 hours away from the San Jose airport. Although the hotel does offer transportation for a fee, the fee is significantly higher than the actual price it takes to transfer. So, do not use their service. The food is deplorable. It is the same thing everyday. It is presented, cooked and tastes poorly. The only decent restaurant is the steakhouse, but it requires a reservation (eligible after a 2 night stay). The problem with that is that there is no limit as to how many people one person is allowed to reserve for! So, one person can reserve for 20 people and no one says anything and the restaurant becomes fully booked. The checking-in staff was also very unpleasant. The Wi-Fi was down, after I paid for it, so when I went to go to explain it to them - they didn't believe me. The employee had to go around and ask (took 30 minutes of me standing there) to verify that I was not lying, so rude. There were many other instances, but too many to list. The only pleasant staff was the ones working at the bar at night. The shows were also not at all 'multi-cultural' as they were not even remotely reflective of the cultures they attempted to depict. The location is also very excluded. The hotel does not have any surrounding tourist areas. The beach is unkempt and the chairs are old and uncomfortable - not at all like the pictures. I sincerely do not recommend this hotel.

Fiesta time in Costa Rica

I like the hotel but i got tired of the food very soon. (Breakfast is the same every day). If you go here, do not pay for wi fi, it doesn't work. I was able to get wi fi around 4 times (for a short time) in 5 nights. You can make reservations in the restaurants once every two nights. Hotel is too far from the airport. (Drove 3 hours to get there)

Great for relaxation.

Pros: The environment is beautiful and well kept. Most of the staff was friendly.
Cons: More staff members speaking English for English speaking visitors like myself.
Location: The location is very seclusive. It is too far away from San Jose and certain places of interest that I wanted to visit.
Had a wonderful time participating in the activities. Reception(David) and the bell boy(Micheal) were very patient and helpful. The food was good but needed more variety. The entertainment team was energetic and did an amazing job of their presentation nightly.Overall we an enjoyable time.

Great value, all you could need

Pros: Beach, food, activities, staff
Cons: $41 dollars for sunscreen in the gift store is criminal! Do NOT forget sunscreen!
Location: We rented a car for a day, otherwise getting around is not very plausible. Really cool waterfall hike in Montezuma and beaches along the coast.
I found most of the positive reviews on this place to be incredibly accurate. It's not a 5 star resort by any means, but probably about as close as you're gonna find for the price. I'll start with the negatives, which were easy for me to look past, but may not be for some. My "king size bed" was two queens pushed together! It was not too big a deal for my girlfriend and I since we sleep on a queen normally and didn't mind spreading out when sitting in the room. Several times I was given a line about things being closed during what was supposed to be normal operating hours for "maintenance" like the sushi restaurant (which I did end up getting to go to and it was great). For the most part everything operated as advertised, but if you're one of those people who need every little thing to be exactly as you expect it, you might get frustrated here... The positives far out-weigh the negatives as the staff was friendly and accommodating, the facilities were well kept, the beach was amazing (miles of sandy beach pretty much to yourself), the food was great even the little snack bar, there were plenty of activities on site, and at least while we were there it seemed very uncrowded and relaxed. Not really a place for nightlife, check out Santa Teresa if you're looking to party hard (few hours away). This place is relaxed and family friendly.

Best Vacation Ever!

Pros: Free breakfast, Quiet
Cons: No free Internet, no free wifi in rooms
Everthing was awesome at Tambor! My Wife and I absoultlely love the place. Not a single problem. Minor the Bellman was very helpful.

Staff is wonderful!!

The staff at Barcelo are wonderful! Had a great time. Yes, the food is not the best but everything else made up for it. Edwin is wonderful as is Gerald. Would recommend Barcelo. If you go look for Steven on the beach to book your outings. He is great!

A very nice hospitality option.

Pros: Close restaurants, Free Internet, Quiet
Barcelo Tambor Beach is all you need to be in contact with wildlife, beach and the best comfort. You can enjoy Costa Rica's best of bests by having dinner at the restaurant, or watching the popular night shows. The resort is very clean, food is great, and the location is very appealing to those who appreciate nature and the best of Costa Rica. Long beaches, lots of palm trees, jungle and bird sanctuary and horse stables right on resort. Many iguanas and beautiful birds to see, and howler monkeys live in the trees of the area. Service was outstanding.

nice looking hotel...

Pros: Quiet
definately not worthy of a 5 star rating..poor quality food...service not exceptional....nice enough but nothing special...should be downgraded to 3 or 4 star...would not go back again. journey to the hotel was good, beautiful countryside and views.

Wonderful Wonderful !!!!!!!

My son and Daughter in-law took my husband myself and their 2 Boys 11 and 8. We had a marvlous time. The only thing was that the pool could have been cleaner and the rooms were spacious and very comfortable but as the week went on the housekeeping was a little lax with the niceities ie. the towels left on the bed somedays they were there and some not. The staff were more than accomidating and great with the kids. We went ziplinning in Montazuma and that was an experiance that I would not miss the guides were very understanding of the uncertanity that we felt at first safety was top of their list always. They put us at ease and truley cared that we have a great time with them. I would go back in a heartbeat !!! The flight from San Jose to Tambor was great well worth the extra money although we were told that we missed a great trip quotthe sites are amazingquot . And lastly dont forget the 70 SPF no matter how tough your skin is plus it costs $* USD for a bottle at the hotel and in any town that we visited.
