To start, the hotel does not have an elevator. It is not enclosed and has no A/c through the hallways. All buildings are 3 floors. 3 days before I checked in I called the hotel and asked them to please give me a room on the firat floor. When we checked in the room was on the 3rd floor and the beds were not seperated. The A/C system does not seem to be the best as it is not cool enough. They gave us a second room on the second day which was on the first floor. When we went to the room the keys were not activated. Please keep in mind the lobby is not near by. I must day the servers. Restaurant staff, cleaning crew, bar tenders are extremely nice and friendly. Such great attitudes. The front desk however is not so great. After all the inconvenience at the beginning when I checked out they were rushing me because I was 20 min late. Also, the food is not so great.

Expected more from Riu Playacar

Pros: The beach is amazing, blue crystal water. AIso I cannot complaint about the staff, they made us feel like family and tried to engage us
Cons: The food is the main reason we have decided never to visit this hotel again, another big negative is the MUSTY odor in the rooms
We spent one week at the Riu Playacar in Playa del Carmen Mexico, overall we had a decent time but the resort could improve on a few things. THE ROOMS: Our room was very nice and clean, however, there was this awful musty odor that never went away even with the balcony’s door open and the ceiling fan running 24 hours. There were some bloodstains on the pillow covers on day one but those were quickly replaced by housekeeping. The bed and bed sheets were damp and they also smelled nasty, my wife developed a horrible rash after a couple of days of exposure to those damped bed sheets. If you suffer from allergies (especially to mold) I would suggest you look elsewhere. THE FOOD AND RESTAURANTS: The best way to describe the food is “TASTELESS”, presentation was good but the food had no flavor at all, we were hoping to have some authentic Mexican food, the food from Taco Bell or Chipotle taste more Mexican than what they served us in those restaurants. Breakfast was decent (you can’t go wrong with eggs, fruits and cereal) but lunch and dinners were pretty much the same every single day, even the buffets were arranged exactly the same way every day.

Great Relaxing Vacation!

My wife and I vacationed at Riu Playacar in Nov. 2013. We loved the Old Mexico feel of the resort. It was a terrifc experience...beautiful resort...helpful and friendly staff...super clean rooms...wonderful double pool and an awesome beach...and excellent food. We are planning to return next year with a group of friends. For shuttle transfers to the hotel we used "Entertainment Plus." Their shuttles in Cancun are called "US Transfer." We got a Private Shuttle for $109 roundtrip for up to 10 people going to the same resort. I highly recommend this since we got to the resort in under an hour. Regular shuttles can take several hours as they stop at several resorts. US Transfer uses new vans and we had a great driver.

4th visit with very few complaints!

Pros: quaint tropical-feeling resort, great buffet selection
Cons: too many crying children, beach isn't being cleaned enough
This was my 4th visit to this resort. We had a great trip overall, but had a few issues. First, we noticed that the sand was not being cleaned with the machine like in past visits. There were cigarette butts and other pieces of trash that you didn't find at other resorts down the beach. I noticed that I saw them cleaning the sand in the evening at other resorts, but not ours. There were also A LOT of kids there this time which I have to account to "kids stay free" that was being advertised. This made it rough on our adult party of 8, as we were constantly around crying, wild, screaming children- not an ideal way to relax! The food selection was great as usual and I noticed that there were foam mattress pads on the bed, which really helped with improve the comfort level. The staff is always great, with the exception of some of the front desk associates who don't smile and are fairly rude- especially to Americans (or this is the impression I got). Our group was an older, non-partying crowd and I just felt that we weren't treated with the respect and courtesy that we should have been after the amount of money we spent to vacation together. Unfortunately just a few employees can impact the whole experience of a vacation. We aren't sure if we will return at this point. After the crying children and unkempt beach, we may try an adults only all-inclusive. I do love the atmosphere and feel of the resort, so it is worth a shot if you haven't been there before. Maybe try it when "kids stay free" isn't being offered!

Slightly above Average

We stayed at the Riu Playacar for an informal family reunion last January. Unfortunately the weather was much cooler than normal, so we spent much of the time shopping for fleece jackets and sitting in the lobby bar visiting. As a result, my review of the hotel may be a little skewed. Nevertheless, after staying several times at the Riu Jalisco in Nuevo Vallarta this property was a little disappointing. Far fewer restaurant and bar options,the activity schedule was less than inspiring, and the staff wasn't overly friendly either. It wasn't a horrible stay, but with the selection of all-inclusive's an area, you could probably find better. I will say that the price was right, and the pool area an Asian restaurant were both outstanding. All in all I give it a B.
