Great location and marvelous river views. Staff were warm, courteous and helpful. The hotel itself however needs a bit of work. For a hotel that bills itself as five star there were a number of misaligned details. Temperature control system was extremely noisy. Water stains on window frames. Toilet seat paint was chipped in several places. And overall the room seemed a bit drab - in need of some freshening up, if not a modern renovation.

On the Quai in Porto

Pros: Neat view over the river; convenient restaurant/breakfast facility. Welcoming staff.
Cons: I had one dinner there but felt overwhelmed by waiters fawning around me. I prefer to give an order and be left alone. I ate elsewhere after.
Location: Easy to walk to funicular railway (€2.50 each time; public transport card not acceptable). Center of town easily accessible from top.
The hotel comprises three very old houses (World Heritage Quality) upgraded to the 21st century. Modern facilities, nice breakfast, walking distance to a funicular up to the main city. Portuguese TV is mostly subtitled, so many channels have English-language programs.

Right on the river

Pros: Views and breakfast. Staff was very helpful in all ways.
Porto is beautiful and this hotel is right in the middle of the action. Beautiful river and bridge views.

Amazing location

We have been to Porto several times while visiting Portugal. Pestana Porto was recommended by friends - so I booked without doing my normal research. We were thrilled with the fabulous location and great view from our window. Our only disappointment was that we were only booked for one short night (checked in at 5pm and had a 6am flight to catch in the morning). Our room was in the new section with views looking across the Douro to all the iconic Port Cellars. Great restaurants and bars at our door step. The opening sound proof windows and sitting area were all part of making our last night in Portugal memorable.
