Classic respite from a plastic chain hotel

Pros: Character and comfort
Cons: Lights in the rooms; working computer with printer to check in on your flight.
Location: La Villita, take trolley to Plaza Mayor
I encountered this hotel in a list of hotels in air/hotel packages in San Antonio. It is a classic hotel built over 100 years ago. In 1985 the whole building was moved to current location in toto, over several days, earning a Guinness record for moving such large structure. It has been lovingly restored, is full of period furniture and is a welcome respite from plastic chain monsters, which all all alike. Fairmount has character and you will remember it. It is very comfortable, plumbing is up to date, elevator works, bus stops at the door and convention center is across the street. There is no bar, restaurant or nightclub, thankfully. A few steps away there is a cute cantina and a craft village, La Villita. My room was dark as the light came from three table lamps, but if you want a proper, ceiling light, go to Europe. In the lobby there is a complimentary coffee and oranges and in the afternoon also cookies and lemonade, needed in the hot climate.

The hotel was walking distance to everything.

Pros: The hotel was clean and beautiful, inside and out. Our room was also spotless. Service was great and helpful .
Cons: Food in the city was wonderful, however we were not able to experience the hotel's menu as their restaurant had not opened.
Location: We were near the Riverwalk and the Alamo and were able to walk everywhere. Our visit was during the Day of the Dead celebration so there was much to do
I would recommend the Fairmont Hotel to any of my friends. We were close to restaurants and entertainment and could find whatever we needed by walking.

Great Downtown Location ? Family Friendly

This was our first family vacation with our 14 month old son, so our van was loaded with everything but the kitchen sink. We expected some problems with so much gear, but Nathan was there to help us get everything out of the van and into the room without hesitation. We required a little more attention than normal because we had a toddler. When we needed more towels the staff delivered them promptly and every morning and evening when we wanted to give our son his milk, the hotel restaurant gave us all the milk we needed without charging! We stayed in a Veranda Suite that overlooks the courtyard on one side, and Hemisfair Park on the other (windows on both sides ? big room). When we entered our room we felt as though we staying in a Victorian. We walked into a sitting room that was decorated with the most beautiful antique furniture, then the large bedroom with two queen beds was connected with a long hallway (a luxurious bathroom is located off of the hallway). Luke the Labrador, The Fairmount?s Pet relations Director is as cute as he can be ? my son loved him and Luke even let us take several pictures of him and my son with out any problems. He?s a big friendly ham of a mutt. I can?t say enough great things about the Fairmount. The staff was super friendly and prompt with any request. The location was excellent, across the street from trolley service to everything in town, and just a short walk from all the things we wanted to do, like the Riverwalk, La Vallita and The Alamo.
