It was fine

We went there for a pleasure/vacation to San Francisco. The hotel was fine, it wasn't very fancy but we didn't spend much time there. The only thing we would change is that it was not very near any real night life. Their in hotel restaurant was too expensive - we never even tried it.

Cthedral Hill Hotel

My husband and I did not like the hotel at all. It's a shame because it is a really beautiful hotel or was at one time. We moved into a different room room when we first checked in, because it was pretty shabby looking. We didn't like the fact that you have to pay for parking in the hotel's garage! You would figure since that you pay for the room, the parking would be included! It was 22 dollars a day! For people who don't even stay at the hotel, it's 25 dollars a day! It is not in the Pacific Heights area, it's in a shabby area in the city. Don't get me wrong, the hotel wasn't in a really bad area, but it was pretty rough! I was asking on of the ladies at the front desk about how the cable cars run and she gave me a short, curt answer. I thought she was pretty rude. I kind of figured it out for myself. She was not helpful at all! The maids and other employees we saw in the hallways were very nice. They was not even a pen in our room to map out an intinerary! I know they are turning into a hospital, so I guess I don't have to worry about staying here again.

Would NOT stay there again!

I stayed there one night and that was enough for me. As soon as we walked into the room, I was disappointed. What is NOT wrong with this room?? The carpet was really dirty and stained, the temp dial to the A/C was all rusty and dirty, the wall paper were pealing off the walls, the house phone didn't work so we had to use our cell phone to call front desk so they can fix our A/C, there were mold in the bathroom ceiling, discoloration in the tub and sink....overall, it was a bad experience. I've been too cheaper hotels that were cleaner. Do not stay here.

OK, but rooms need some refurbishing - bathroom & A/C

Hotel location is great if you have a car with you. They have a parking garage. The cost is $* for in & out privileges. I checked other hotels that had "free" parking, but it was limited [first come, first served] and some were lots 3 or more blocks away from hotel. Also, their rates were higher than the Cathedral Hill Hotel rates + cost of parking. As to the refurbishing, the bathroom needed some extra deep cleaning, new caulking, and some broken tiles need to be replaced. The A/C unit needs some work done - cleaning and possibly recharged with freon. If you are without a car and have some difficulty walking long distances, this hotel might not work for you. It's several blocks from cable cars. I don't know about bus schedules. Of course, taxis can be called, but that can get expensive. I like to save my money for the wonderful restaurants in this great city.

probably would stay again...the hotel is really cheap,BUT

The hotel is located at the best spot ever, its close to everything. For young people like me(27) that hotel is probably the best deal you can ever get.The housekeepers and front desk staff are really friendly,i CAN'T say the same thing about some of the garage attendants(there is a fat guy that i almost got into a fight). There is a heated pool, and the pool area is nice..the rooms are clean! The hotel has a parking garage, but its not free for the guest of the hotel. You have to pay $ per day if you want to park your car there. The rooms are non-smoking and they will ask you to sign a waver that you agree to pay $ fee if you get caught to smoke in the room.

It was okay for the price and location.

When we got there the front desk guy was extremely helpful. There is some great food right across the street, its a quick bus ride down to fisherman's wharf for only $ and its within a 10 minute walk to china town although I would not advise walking back at night. The avenue that the hotel was on was okay but a block down was very rough. The rooms were nothing special. The bed wasn't very comfortable. My wife flipped the breaker in the bathroom and we had to call twice and an hour later our bathroom lights were back on. The elevator was extremely slow in the morning and they only had 2 out of 3 working. The hotel staff as awhole was very friendly. There were homeless people that came and hung out occasionally in front of the hotel to beg for money. I never felt threatened or unsafe though. Pay the money for the shuttle service for the airport, the BART station was a hike. We took the shuttle on the way home.

Would not stay again

The hotel had major problems with the door key not working. Their computer crashed and customers had to wait approx 1 hour to have the doors opened manually. The elevator also did not work properly. Skipped requested floors. The hotel lobby furniture was very shabby. The room itself was clean but very dated 1960's Just a note for those who are looking for a room before Oct 31st in which the hotel will be demolished for a new hospital. Sept 6, 2009

It's okay but wouldn't stay again

I found the hotel satisfactory if you want just a place to sleep for the night. I don't know how all the rest of the rooms are like there but mine was needing updating. It was like I stepped into the 60's or 70's. The washroom was clean but the flooring, toilet and bathtub/shower was older and depressing looking. The washroom sort of reminded me of a hospital washroom only bigger. The rug in the room was old and looked like it needed a change and unhygenic looking- or maybe just old looking. The coffee maker didn't look cleaned right in the room & some coffee cup and plastic cover covers had some brown stains on it...eww. I'm a huge coffee drinker & that was the first time I turned down drinking coffee first thing in the morning in a hotel room. The pillows were uncomfortably flat and bed too firm with not enough. The vent blew out cold air all day/night and there was no heat when I was feeling colder in the room. I could not sleep at nights due to the noisy traffic outside and should've bought ear plugs. The hotel reminded me of an old 60's hospital when I first saw it from the outside. Lastly, the internet was horribly expensive- $* for 20 minutes...I had free 15 mins. of internet access when I was in a european hotel... However, I must say the staff service was excellent. Most of the staff I encountered were friendly and most helpful when I asked where to go places and sites. In a nutshell I don't think I would stay there again.

Hotel review

The outside of the hotel was 1960's style and rather worn looking. But what a pleasant surprise it was when we walked through the door. The lobby, including, gift shop, snack shop and restaurant, were very nice. Our room was pleasant and clean with some updated renovations in the bathroom. There was a binder of information about services in the area. The staff was most accomodating in tending to my needs: a teabag for the room beverage service, printing plane boarding passes, and arranging for transportation. We did not eat in the restaurant, or use the pool, so I cannot comment on that.

Just okay

Although the hotel itself is nice enough, the room we had was not. It was rather smelly. We had to leave the windows open for it to air out and be bareable. The central location was good, but the busy nearby streets made it rather difficult to get a restful nights sleep. Also, the breakfast buffet was not worth the money they were charging. You could go across the street for a better meal and better price. The breakfast buffet selection left alot to be desired. Overall the stay was just okay, but could have been better if the room was cleaner and smelled fresher.
