We booked this hotel for Skittles. She did not disappoint. We stayed 4 nights. She was in our room 3 of the night and stayed with us until we checked out. She’s a love. The hotel was charming and quirky. All in all, fun. The breakfast was excellent. Staff is very friendly and polite. The location is great. We enjoyed our stay here.

I imagine that the hotel was exactly like this 100 years ago, and that’s not a bad thing. Is you are looking for a modern hotel experience, this is not your place but if you want a welcoming and comfortable experience like you imagine it was years ago, it’s perfect.

Allowing that downtown San Francisco has deteriorated rapidly in recent years and I'm not recommending the area itself, the Golden Gate is an old-style oasis amongst a lot of expensive budget hotels. Primarily, it is old school. You deal with humans, not bots. Those humans befriend you (at least mine did!) The hotel showed me how to make the morning coffee at my request, gave me fridge space, did everything it could to make a short stay in a small room (it had a shower but not a toilet, really no problem as I didn't even see anyone else on my floor and the bathroom was almost next door) as pleasant as possible. While I'm not in a hurry to revisit downtown San Fran, I'd certainly recommend this place for those who like old style charm, and don't mind limited square footage and limited modern conveniences.
