The city of Schleiden is the capital of the Eifel National Park. Almost 50% of their area is in today's large protected area. The former district town Schleiden includes the Kneipp health resort Gemünd as well as 16 smaller villages in the Schleidener valley and on the plateau.

The imposing castle as well as the castle church in Schleiden are the landmarks of the city. The idyllic Kneipp spa Gemünd is located at the confluence of Urft and Olef. The ground-level spa park with Kneipp facilities invites you to linger and to the Sunday spa concert (May to September) or mini golf game. Art lovers should also visit the KunstForum Eifel and the gallery "Eifel Kunst" in Gemünd or the Kulturschock in Schleiden or stroll along the Kunstmeile in Schleiden.

The National Park Gate Gemünd is the first point of contact and starting point for a journey of discovery through the Eifel National Park. The thematic and interactive exhibition and the films about the national park, some with subtitles in several languages, give a first insight into the diversity of the jungle of tomorrow. The National Park Gate Gemünd is open daily, and the visit to the exhibition is free. Every Saturday at 11:00 am at the National Park Gate Gemünd, an approx. Three-hour guided ranger guided tour into the landscape of forest, water and wilderness begins.

A well-developed cycling and hiking trails network with Eifelsteig and Rur Olef route and a high-quality circular hiking trails offer active enjoyment of nature. The dams of the Eifel with their imposing dam walls can be reached by bicycle with almost no inclines.

From May to October, a historic rail bus, the Oleftalbahn, travels on the route between Kall and Hellenthal via Gemünd, Schleiden and through the half-timbered town of Olef with the village square crossing, which is unique in Germany.

Worth a visit is the former NS-Ordensburg Vogelsang, which was built by the National Socialists as a training location for executives. New attraction there are the two exhibitions "Nazi Documentation" and "National Park Eifel".

Information about the national park capital Schleiden and the Northern Eifel can be obtained from the Tourist Information in the National Park Gate in Gemünd. The ideal starting point and end point for hiking and biking tours are the cycling and hiking stations Gemünd, Olef and Schleiden.
