Lovely Arugam Bay, a moon-shaped curl of soft sand, is home to a famed point break that many regard as the best surf spot in the country. It's a tiny place, with a population of a few hundred, and everything is dotted along a single road which parallels the coast. So in other words, the epitome of the laid-back beach scene that first drew surfers and sun-seekers to Sri Lanka.

Day 4: Arugam Bay to Pasikudha
  • 1 stop
  • Meals: lunch, snacks
  • Accommodation: overnight stay at Malu Malu beach resort
Pasikudah Beach
  • 4h
These spectacular back-to-back beaches, 34km north of Batticaloa, present as stark – and confusing – a juxtaposition as you could imagine. At the northern tip of the peninsula on a tightly enclosed bay, the breathtaking white sands of sickle-shaped Passekudah beach are being developed as a kind of mini-Cancun, a government-driven 'Special Economic Zone' with oodles of luxury hotels planned to ring the bay. In contrast, Kalkudah beach, 2km east and south along the ocean is mostly deserted – save the odd fisherman and his boat. Anchoring these two areas is the unappealing town of Valaichchenai, which is inland and has the bus stop and train station and sits near the junction of the A11 and A15 highways.
Day 5: Pasikudha to Nilaveli
  • 1 stop
  • Meals: lunch, snacks, breakfast
  • Accommodation: Chaya Blue Resort
Nilaveli Beach
  • 3h
Nilaveli, the furthest north of the Trinco region's two beach resort areas, is more intimate than Uppuveli. Hotels are scattered up and down little lanes off the coast highway (B424) – it's around six kilometres from one end of the village to the other. If you're looking for some serious beach time, then Nilaveli could be just the ticket, for the sands are golden and the ocean inviting. Offshore, Pigeon Island offers fabled diving and snorkelling.

Extensive gardens and renowned water gardens ring the base of the rock.
