Madaba
  • 45m
The town of Madaba (approx. 90,000 inhabitants), 35 km southwest of Jordan's capital, is known as the City of Mosaics. World famous and much visited is the mosaic map of the Holy Land from the second half of the 6th century.
Karak Castle
  • 1h 30m
The famous Crusader stronghold Karak (or Kerak), later a Mamluk fortress, is an impressive example of military architecture, built on top of a ridge, separated from the old fortified town by a deep moat. The place was one of the main settlements of the ancient Kingdom of Moab around the 9th century B.C. The Old Testament describes how the King of Israel and his allies besieged Kir Moab (or Kir Heres), as Karak was then known, but King Mesha's sacrifice of his first-born son averted the imminent defeat. After Nabataean domination at the beginning of the Common Era, the city became a regional center in Roman Arabia (under the name Characmoba), and a diocesan town during the Byzantine period. It is featured as a walled city on the Madaba mosaic map

Shobak Castle
  • 1h
The Castle of Shobak, the "royal mountain" Montreal or Mons Regalis as it used to be called, was the first Crusader fortress in a line of strongholds in Oultrejordain the territory East of the river Jordan. Baldwin I King of Jerusalem ordered its construction in 1115 to control the caravan routes between Syria and Egypt. Perched on a conical hilltop, it had a well shaft inside that could be accessed via 375 steps down to the water vein, an unparalleled advantage during a siege. In fact, Montreal managed to hold out longer (until May 1189) against Saladin's attacks than the Crusader's main castle Kerak.

Petra, the legendary capital of the Nabataeans, is one of the most fascinating travel destinations in the world. You can wander for days through a breathtaking landscape, discovering more than 600 tombs with stunning rock-cut facades, mysterious burial complexes, cult sites on top of the mountains, enigmatic temples and votive niches along processional pathways, aqueducts and cisterns of an ingeniously conceived water management in the desert. Erected by the Nabataeans more than 2,000 years ago, many of the buildings were expanded during the Roman Empire, or transformed into Byzantine churches or Crusader castles in later times. This web guide offers you a wealth of in-depth information and curated photo tours, showing highlights, hidden gems, walks and trails - also off the beaten track, while conveying historical, religious and cultural contexts.

Dead Sea
  • 3h
The Jordanian shore of the Dead Sea is a fascinating natural, cultural, spiritual, and therapeutic landscape. The Dead Sea, an interior hypersaline lake of 80 km length, lies about 430 meters below sea level, which makes its shores the lowest point on earth. It is also considered the largest natural spa in the world, for its healing properties renowned since Antiquity. Its geographic position on a major trade crossroads, the rich alluvial soils, and the availability of water from perennial springs facilitated human settlements, creating a rich cultural heritage that has spanned more than 10,000 years. The area along Jordan's southeast Dead Sea coast, known today as the Southern Ghor, is believed to have been home to the five "Cities of the Plain" mentioned in the Old Testament: Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboim, and Zoar. In the Bible, the Dead Sea is referred to as the "Sea of Salt," and Arab writers call it the "Sea of Lot".
Mount Nebo
  • 1h 30m
The summit of the Siyagha, 700 m above the Jordan Valley overlooking the NE part of the Dead Sea, is believed to be Mount Nebo, the place where Moses - the prophet revered by the three monotheistic religions - has been shown the Promised Land, and where he died. Today, Mount Nebo is an active Memorial, Franciscan monastery, and archaeological site that attracts visitors from the whole world, not only because of its historical and religious significance, but also because of the outstanding artistic value of the architectural remains and Byzantine mosaics that it preserves and displays.
