Description

Discover the heart of historic Montreal on this enthralling walking tour. A professional guide shares knowledge of the city's storied past, pointing out the architectural landmarks and centuries-old secrets that abound within the stone walls of Old Montreal. Opt either for the East tour or the West tour or choose both for a complete overview of Montreal's historic district.

Start off at Notre-Dame Basilica, the first neo-gothic church in Canada, and admire its beautiful architecture.

Pass by the limestone façade, gabled roof, and 18th century clock of Saint Sulpice Seminary—one of Montreal’s oldest buildings, this 1684 structure is still used as a residence for the Society of Priests of Saint Sulpice.

Learn about the life of Montrealers from centuries past, and continue on to major historical sites such as the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel. Built in 1678, this church’s name means “Our Lady of Good Help” and has been a pilgrimage site for sailors wishing to give thanks for safe travels at sea.

On the East tour, as you contemplate the domed, Parisian-style Bonsecours Market, your knowledgeable guide shares insight into Montreal, past and present.

The West tour of Old Montreal let you step into the Place Royale—this small, cobbled plaza was the heart of Montreal’s urban life in the 1700s— and ends near Pointe-à-Callière, Montreal’s world-class museum of archaeology and history.

The tour is a must! A short 1 1/2 hours filled with LOTS of great information. Isabelle (sp?) was a great guide, and considerate too. It was very, very cold and so Isabelle would have our small group step into buildings to give history/background while we warmed up. So don't be daunted if the weather is cold - it is worth the time! We also had a wonderful stop at a bakery to learn more about maple syrup, with samples of different varieties - and maple butter too. The maple syrup butter cookies are NOT TO BE MISSED! Definitely start you day/weekend in Old Montreal with this tour!
