The ruins of ancient Olympia - dedicated to Zeus, the father of the Gods - are located at the south-western foot of Mount Kronios, and are a must see destination when visiting the port of Katakolon. This wonderous site continues to be excavated to this day - ever since early French archeologists started back in 1829.
Olympia was built to be the centre of athletic excellence in Greece, and indeed it was here that the Olympic Games were originally held every four years to honour Zeus.
On our journey we'll get the chance to admire various stunning aspects of Olympia such as the Gymnasium, the Palaestra, the temple of Zeus, the temple of Hera, Heras altar, and finally the ancient stadium of Olympia from the outside. Our local tour guide will give a detailed insight into the history and mythology of the ancient Olympic Games. We'll also see pictures of what all the monuments used to look like, as we bask in the aura of this site's magnificence.
