Riverfront/Historic & Charming /Wrap Around Porch - 3BS6 - River House

The river has a way of calling us to it, of calling us back to ourselves and bringing us together. No matter where we're from, the river has a way of bringing us home again. The familiar sound of water cascading, the warmth of a campfire, and the way the grass feels on our skin brings back memories that never quite leave us. Certain memories bring us comfort and peace, others take us back to our childhood, some memories make us smile and laugh so that we forget what it was that was troubling us. The river, like a favorite memory, has the ability to transport us.

The River House is a historic homestead from the late 1800s with all the charm and coziness of home. This welcoming vacation getaway is the perfect place for families and friends to gather. The wrap around covered porch overlooks the river and is a much-loved spot for morning coffee and bird watching. Wake up to the sight of the sun coming up over the river, all of the bedrooms have excellent water views. The kitchen offers plenty of room for gathering around the table to share meals together or play board games. Tell campfire stories or roast marshmallows around the riverside fire pit. The large, grassy area by the river is a perfect place for kids to play, and guests can fish right from the bank.

The River House is full of character and good memories. It has sat beside these ancient waters for more than a century and is still here today waiting to welcome each of us home to the river.

100% What we wanted and needed!!
We had a family vacation and the house, location and outside activities were more than what we expected!! I was a little nervous from previous reviews about the beds, house and signal but you're not staying at the Ritz people!!! LOL!! The house was adorable, clean, homey and comfortable in EVERY way!!!! We always bring our own pillows but the beds were clean and super comfortable. So was the furniture and seating. The upstairs and porch were my absolute favorite things about this house!!! Not to mention the VIEW!!!😍😍😍 You are literally a skip away from swimming in the river which was so much fun and refreshing! We plopped our chairs in the river or a floating, poured a drink and watched the kids play in the water. It was literally the most relaxing and fun trip. It's true, you don't get a signal at all, unless you're outside and your phone will work!! Just not Facebook, but thats not why you're coming here folks. Slow down and enjoy each other ❤ Would absolutely come again. THANK YOU!!!

Not worth staying. Did not even stay 24 hours when our reservation was for 2 nights
When we arrived, we noticed the house is in desperate need of home maintenance repairs. The gate by the driveway is missing, the roof soffit and trim is rotted, and the house needs to be painted and get some TLC. It looks very run down. I was under the impression that the house was right by the river and the fire pit. I did not realize it was so far away/ felt like a different property. There were dead roaches in the upstairs bedroom. My family and I had the pleasure of enjoying the stink bugs walking over the tv, walls, and floor. I get that we are in the mountains, but they really have an exterminator come every month. The master bathroom by the toilet smells like sewage. The master bedroom shower head needs to be changed and felt as if I was bathing at a campground. The sewage smell did not help the feeling. The shower head desperately needs to be cleaned or replaced. The water shoots out everywhere. There are absolutely no cleaning products to clean up a mess. I made eggs and bacon for breakfast and the only thing I had to clean off the kitchen counter was dish soap. I had to check every dish to make sure they were clean before I used them because I kept finding dirty dishes in the cupboard. There was a mouse running around the living room in the morning and went into the owner's closet. The house needs a full deep clean. The master has a weird, musty smell on the bed. We did bring our own bedding and after I made the bed with our bedding, my head started hurting once I laid down. The worst one was the dust/mold or something in the crawlspace or the duct work that made my daughter, husband, and I wake up with the absolute worst congestion. We were fine before we went to sleep (we stayed outside for a large portion of the evening) but in the morning, none of us could breathe through our noses. We went to Food Lion to get decongestant medicine, and before we were even halfway there, our sinuses cleared up. When we returned to the house about an hour later, we all were congested again within 30 minutes. After talking to my family, we all decided that we did not want to stay at the house another night and rather just drive the 5 hours home than deal with mainly the sinus issues/critters/smells. We are very disappointed in the house. I do have to say, the only bonus to the place was the fact the kitchen did have everything we needed and it was nice. That was the only good thing.

Not what I expected
NO cell service and no internet. The house is on the corner of a busy road and a neighborhood. Pictures make is appear as if it is on a large piece of property. It’s not. Parking is just off the busy road. The mattress and pillows need updated The master bath showier is tiny Lighting need updated. Furniture is not comfortable. We did love the large porch.

Perfect local get away
We truly enjoyed the calm surroundings of the River House. We had no issues with the property and did not interact with the owners at all. We chose this rental for the stream and river and were able to fish in both locations! The house was very charming and up to date with current appliances. We definitely will come back!

Stress-free vacation
We were looking for a place to kick back and relax. River House was perfect. We especially enjoyed the fire pit by the river. Hot dogs just taste better when cooked over an open fire. Our dog loved the freedom to run on the deck. Only down-side: no bathroom upstairs. We plan to come back next year and bring the kayaks.

Great for families!
This location, well, frankly, I bet any of the New River Retreat locations, are located in a beautiful area. There was a great area for kids to play, to have campfires, swim in the river, and generally relax. There was NO cell service - I mean, not any. I only worried that we might need to call 911 and not be able; other than that it helped us all relax. Beds were merely OK; pillows were flat, but everything seemed clean and well-stocked. Would we return? Yes, but I'd bring my own pillows!
