A great location in a Historic area..

Pros: It's elegance and its charm. Very much what we were hoping for.
Cons: The aforementioned issues with electrical and plumbing. There was some significant lack of forethought in the retrofitting.
Location: Location is perfect for first time visitors to London. 5-10 minutes walk to Piccadilly, Pall Mall, and St. James Park. 10-15 minutes to Trafalgar.
The Dukes is magnificent, in an old school way. Beautiful, secluded, well appointed. The staff was unfailingly cheerful and courteous. It is, however, and old building, and much of the retrofits for electrical are spotty. Our room came with a hairdryer, but no outlet in the bathroom. Also, the light-switch for the bathroom was on the outside, so there was no was to use it without blasting light into the whole room. The hot water faucet puts out a flow that is near scalding, so be careful. Too, the bathroom ventilation system is not equal to the task, but there is no shortage of hot water or pressure. For us, it was an OK trade-off, because the secluded and quiet location, mere minutes away from major attractions, and the ambiance more than made up for the building quirks.

Beautiful old hotel in the historic Green Park are

Pros: The old style, charmingly British atmosphere and history. Lovely big bathrooms, great linens and charming staff.
Cons: The internet service provide is awful and in my opinion unneccesary in this day and age. Way too much use of scented candles,
Location: 'great restaurants, The Green Park, wonderful shopping, The National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery etc. etc. Underground station is minutes a
We spent only one night recently in transit back to US. Lovely place and pleasant staff. The bar is a wonderful old watering hole that was charming and served great drinks. Only two issues. First the lobby is full of scented candles which I found close to nauseating and whose aroma permeated the hotel, I was bothered by it but I realize that I have a sensitivty to such odors. The second and more important is the ridiculous dance that visitors are required to do to use internet service. It's complex and so unnecessary in the 21st century. We of course complained and got an unsurprising answer from the staff - 'we hear this complaint constantly but so far the management has made no moves to make a change." This is really no competitive in this day and age and when there are so many travellers who expect that easily used internet service is de rigeur.
