Many visitors are enticed to book Mallorca vacation packages simply to experience the golden sand beaches of this sunny tropical paradise. Playa de S'amarador and Playa de Palma El Arenal are two great options for spending a day at the beach. But there's more to this island than beaches. Before you arrive, research rental cars in Mallorca Island and book one for your entire stay. You'll get plenty of use out of it. Not many islands boast beautiful beaches and stunning mountains. Pack a picnic and head to the unspoiled limestone range Serra de Tramuntana on Mallorca's northwest coast. Or drive to the Ferrocarril de Soller and board the vintage train for a scenic 17-mile journey through the countryside. Back in the city, lose yourself in Palma's enormous, stunning Gothic cathedral, La Seu; visit the 14th-century Bellver Castle; and spend a few hours at the Palma Aquarium.
Many of Mallorca's special events pay homage to its rich history. On the second Sunday in May, Festa de Nostra Sanyora de la Victoria marks a 1561 raid by Turkish pirates with a series of mock battles. Every December 31, visitors are invited to partake in Festa de l'Estandard, which is a feast honoring the town of Palma's conquest in 1229. Mallorca is also renowned for producing some of the best wines in the region. If you visit the last Sunday of September, head to Festa des Vermar, a celebration of the grape harvest and local wines.
