I ordered scallops from the restaurant for room service. They smelled like ammonia, which means they’ve gone bad. The restaurant refunded my appetizer, but I had already taken a bite. Luckily I didn’t get sick. Other than that the stay was fine. The property could probably be updated technologically. For example, I was using a phone from the 90s to call for room service, but always got a busy signal: something I haven’t heard in a decade.

Beautiful property, excellent restaurant on-site. Walkable to the Duke campus and Sarah Duke Gardens. Very nice rooms and a beautiful golf course with wildlife everywhere.

When I checked in I was asked "Why are you in Durham" which was quite weird....in a suite that the air conditioning was loud and the shower both the shower knob fell off the wall when I turned the water on and the drain was clogged so water just filled up the to almost overflowing onto the bathroom floor....this hotel is beautiful but room was not up to the standard for this hotel..

There is nothing NOT to like there. It's one of the finest hotels at which I've ever stayed. Staff is primo, value is incredible, rooms are beautiful and in magnificent condition. They had a shuttle that allowed me to leave my car in the parking lot and not have to worry about parking in the wrong parking spaces. This hotel is a gem. I will ALWAYS stay there when I come back to visit my hometown of Durham. It's the finest hotel in the area. Much better than the Carolina Inn, and much less expensive. By paying for Washington Duke reservation in advance, I incurred a huge savings in the cost of the room.

Washington Duke Inn is one of the finest, if not THE finest hotel at which I've ever stayed. Everything about the place is first rate. The staff is so friendly and helpful. I love that they have a free shuttle so I didn't have to drive my car around the campus and park it somewhere it might get ticketed because of my not understanding guest parking there. They're simply one of the greatest hotels ever. I also stayed at Carolina Inn (which was both more expensive and paled in comparison to Washington Duke, and Siena Hotel (same trip--three hotels) which was lovely.

A quick but wonderful respite

Pros: Absolutely everything.
Cons: The architectural style conjured up feelings of aristocracy with its dark furniture and deep colors. It fit the building but I prefer “light!”
Location: The Inn is surrounded by its golf course and the Duke University buildings and gardens. Several historical sites are nearby as well.
My husband and I were thrilled with our overnight stay at the Washington Duke Inn. It was pricey but we splurged for our 50th anniversary. We live thirty minutes away from the site but it felt like we had traveled into the mountain lushness so lovely was the environment and grounds. This trip left us both with a lovely memory.

NO A/C

Pros: Definitely the premier place to stay in Durham, but getting a little dated.
Never been in a motel before where there was no setting on the thermostat to turn the a/c on. It was a FAN ONLY thermostat. I turned the wheel for the temp setting just to see/hear what happened. Nothing! I've stayed there many times and the a/c unit makes a loud "thunk" sound when the compressor comes on. Come to think of it, I think all the thermostats may have been that way. They are all very difficult to get the temp you want. Perhaps this one just didn't work at all. We've decided that for one night (medical overnight for DUMC) Washington Duke, the premier place to stay, just isn't worth the premium anymore. Sorry.
