A Private Club Style

Pros: The feeling of a private club, the quiet elegance of another era. Nice pool and informal dining space overlooking it. Public lounge areas cozy.
Cons: The TV system is complicated, not seamless. Pool access shouldn't be through lobby and Terrace restaurant! Marble showers need safety mats.
Location: On the Sunset Strip, the hotel is just up the hill from the shops restaurants on other main arteries. Near hiking trails.
Having just returned from a couple of days in LA, where I again stayed at The Sunset Tower, I can report that this quiet, a little quirky landmark remains my favorite place to park myself when visiting relatives in the West Hollywood, Beverley Hills part of the city. I am welcomed curb-side at the porte cochere, greeted by name at the front desk just inside, quickly given a room (this time an upgrade). There is no hustle and bustle. Some guests come and go, even to walk their dogs. Normally there are no business meetings. There is no conference center that I am aware of. My room is uncluttered. Its most prominent feature is a large mullioned bay window with a view toward the west that is dominated by the towers of Century City and Westwood. There is a spectacular sunset. Instead of a closet there is a three part armoire with plenty of room to handle a two suiter, plus the garments that come out of it. Another section has shelving and drawers. The third section has a mini-bar. The bathroom fixtures are modern. The amenities are high end. The King bed is comfortable with a side table and lamp. There is a desk opposite the bed and a side chair near the window. All the hard goods are in a uniform style for the hotel, which is medium wood trimmed with gold piping. Very mid-20th Century.

I would not stay here again...

Terrible value, down to the plastic cups in the bathroom...the cynic in me finds it hard to believe that the upper floors are getting plastic cups.Surprisingly small rooms, cheap finishes, dirty grout in the bathrooms. The males at the front desk were very friendly, as were all of the bellmen, the females, however, had a bit of an attitide. During the 5 days I stayed, I had to call Room Service at least 1 extra time 3 of the days, and one day after calling twice they were still 1 hour late -if they had just informed me of the situation, I would have gone out for breakfast. If you want to stay on Sunset, go 2 block down to The Standard, it's half the price. If you want a Boutique Hotel in West Hollywood, stay at the Sunset Marquis...a tiny bit cheaper, but great service, friendly staff, and a lovely atmosphere.

Sunset Blvd at its best!

The Sunset Tower was the ideal combination of an elegant, tastefully decorated quality boutique hotel in the middle of the most active boulevard in LA -the custom made beds and pillows are to die for - my sleep was heavenly - my wife and i almost didn't want to get out of bed - the views are fantastic - breakfast at the Terrace Room overlooking Hollywood was quite a magnificent way to start your day - we're coming back soon!
