About this property

Fontinalis- Historic stone farm house (ca. 1700’s) on famous trout stream.

The stone farmhouse called Fontinalis (meaning of the spring) was built in the flourishing mill village of Springfield in the late 1700s. The source of power for the mills was and remains the 5th largest spring in Pennsylvania, Big Spring. The spring and stream are visible from the house and a short walk down the hill places you at the meandering flow that runs through a beautiful valley of farms and woodlands. Big Spring Run is known as one of the crown jewels of the Cumberland valley limestone trout streams. which includes the Yellow Breeches, Letort, Falling Spring and Green Spring, all notable fisheries and part of the history of North American fly fishing. This is paradise for fly fishermen and If you enjoy wildlife, Big Spring Run is home to deer and turkeys and is a favorite spot for birders.
Fontinalis is located in Newville. It’s placed about 11 miles in each direction from neighboring Shippensburg and Carlisle.

The farm house is also known locally as " the spite house" as it was built by a Scottish immigrant named Davidson to prevent the construction of a road through Springfield village that would have made Springfield the County seat. His efforts appear to have succeeded since Carlisle is now the seat of Cumberland county.

Our home has been restored with attention to detail and features the original hardware on doors, chair rail molding, wide plank floors, deep window sills, colonial colors and fireplaces. Light fixtures and antique furnishings, including pieces from the 1700s , complete the colonial ambience. The home can sleep 7 with three queen beds and a single bed in four bed rooms located on the second floor. One bathroom with shower and tub is located on the second floor and a powder room is located downstairs. The kitchen is well appointed with a work island, updated appliances, cooking utensils, and coffee/ espresso makers. The dinning room off the kitchen is great for gatherings as is the living room area. . The thick stone walls help keep the house warm and the radiant base board heat runs throughout the house. On warmest days the second floor air conditioning makes sleeping very comfortable and helps to cool the downstairs.

There is an outdoor seating area and dinning space that is surrounded by a lush garden. An outdoor grill and fire pit area are available for outdoor entertaining. The kitchen garden off the paved area is full of herbs and mints to make any beverage or meal full of flavor.
The summer kitchen building located near the back entrance is occasionally used to create hearth meals for large gatherings. Also located in the corner of the kitchen is the perfect storage hanging space for fisherman to store waders, cleats and other fishing gear.

Fontinalis is located in a community with rural character with several homes nearby that were part of the historic mill village. The sound of clopping horses from our Amish neighbors is regularly heard and enhances the early American feel of our home.

We are a few miles from the Appalachian trail, in fact the mid point of the trail is located near Boiling Springs only 10 miles away. Mountain lakes for swimming, canoeing and fishing are close by and a hiking/biking trail developed from an old railroad track is nearby. Lancaster, the heart of Amish country, and Hershey Park (amusement rides) are an hour or so away. Day trips to Baltimore , Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. are practical from our home. Gettysburg is a 45 minute drive through beautiful Appalachian orchard country and other famous civil war and revolutionary war battle fields are in day trip range. We are located mid way between Dickinson College and Shippensburg University placing College town amenities within 10 minutes drive. Foodies will enjoy a variety of restaurants, a beer trail, ice cream trail and the Carlisle farmers market on Wednesdays with fresh produce , cheese, local meats and fresh Amish baked goods.

Wonderful graduation weekend
We needed a place to stay and host small gatherings of family/friends for our son's graduation from Dickinson College. Fontinalis was the perfect solution. The hosts were accommodating and very responsive. The house was historic and comfortable. And the grounds were park-like. We had a wonderful stay! Thank you.

Lovely Home
My girlfriends and I have been going away together for 30 years and somewhere different each year. We take turns finding a place to stay and I exceeded all expectations this year. We all agreed that Fontinalis is the best place we stayed. Cecilia and Dan were great at communicating and left us a basket of snacks. The kitchen was well stocked with spices and condiments, coffee, tea and everything we needed. The house is gorgeous and the grounds fun to explore. Everything was perfect! Thank you!

We had a lovely stay at this property. It was a great place to relax for the day as well as a great home base for day trips to Hershey Park and Gettysburg. Lovely houses all around too. Thanks for a relaxing trip!

Hard to imagine ...
... a nicer stay or place. Clean and comfortable, a 200 year old (or more) manor house steeped in history and place. The general area is rolling forested hills and country roads, heavily corn-planted and heavily Amish. Though we might never have left the property and been content, we did get out see a few sights during our three day stay: Tiny Newville, 6 or 7 minutes away (Theo's Diner for breakfast), Carlisle, where we ate at Cafe Bruge and watched the annual corvette parade (hundreds, old and new), a 20 minute drive from Fontinalis, and South Mountain (at the suggestion of Dan and Cecilia), with its beautiful lakes (a great sandy beach on one of them) and nature paths, a very restful and attractive destination not more than 15 minutes away. The simplist pleasure was simply walk down the hill from Fontinalis to a renown trout stream, where we waded in freezing cold water in proximity to several Amish families doing the same (a tractor pulling a half a dozen multi-colored plastic wagons was busy taking them to and from the stream). At one point an old Mennonite couple in a car that had seen better days came puttering along and stopped in the middle of the road to greet our three year olds. I will say that three days is NOT enough time to enjoy Fontinalis itself, the immediate surrounds or the Cumberland Valley. And remember, ... Gettysburg is just a 30 minute drive south. And the house a nice little sound system and ... a Roberta Flack CD! Thanks D and C.

10 STARS!
I can’t say enough wonderful things about this stay. The hosts were amazing, the house was gorgeous and the detail and thought they put into this gem is impeccable. I have to say this is my favorite Vrbo home ever. We had 8 people comfortably and they even accommodated an extra bed for my 11year old granddaughter. The house was perfect! Beautifully stocked and furnished like a museum. The location again, was perfect in between Hershey Park and Gettysburg. We had ages 11 to 66 and there were no issues at all! If I could give 10 stars I would! Thank you Dan and Cecelia for allowing us to stay at your beautiful home!

Perfect place to relax
We had a wonderful time staying the Fontinalis home. It was well stocked with everything we could need! The welcome basket was perfect for the next morning after our long drive to PA. We started our mornings slow with coffee on the quiet back deck and finished the evenings watching fireflies around the fire. We were looking for something centrally located to DC, Hershey Park, and a few battlefields and this hit the spot. Would definitely recommend!

The perfect spot for a Cumberland Valley getaway
Fontinalis was truly a delightful discovery for us, and Cecilia and Dan are wonderful hosts. My family and I have been attending car shows in Carlisle for years, and the property is conveniently located between Carlisle and Shippensburg, as well as being close to the quaint town of Newville. The neighborhood is peaceful and quiet with beautiful surroundings. The house is wonderfully preserved, spacious and comfortable. The kitchen was our favorite - fully stocked and a great space to cook and hang out. The outdoor patio and landscaping are very nice. There is also plenty of parking on the property with easy access. If you enjoy historic places and architecture, Fontinalis is the perfect choice and a great nostalgic setting to unwind from our busy lives, and enjoy the beauty, history and culture of Cumberland Valley.

Unique and wonderful location
My whole family really enjoyed this stay. The house is so unique, with so much history you can feel staying there. I am familiar with the area and love the location. You are not far from any amenities you need but tucked away in a truly beautiful spot to enjoy nature. The house and yard offer such a comfortable stay. The owners have really thought of everything and take such good care of the property and guests. I didn't realize the Amish were close enough that we could listen to the horse-drawn carriages "drive" by. I very highly recommend and hope to stay again down the road. Thank you!
